Radiological Localization of Greater Palatine Foramen Using Multiple Anatomical Landmarks
نویسنده
چکیده
Identification of greater palatine foramen is of prime value for dentists and the oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The objective of present study was to radiologically localize greater palatine foramen with multiple anatomical landmarks. All Computer Tomography scans of individuals who have undergone paranasal sinus evaluation were obtained from the Department of Radiology, Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences, from April 2015 to April 2016. Distance of greater palatine foramen from various known anatomical landmarks was measured across the CT slices. Forty-four CT scans were studied, mean age was 32 (±2.3) years. All scans were from individuals of south Indian origin. GPF was located at 38.38 mm from incisive fossa, 17.6 mm from posterior nasal spine, 18.38 mm from intermaxillary suture, 5.03 mm from second molar and 5.28 mm from third molar. Distances of GPF from incisive foramen and intermaxillary suture differed significantly on right and left sides. In 25 (56.8%) cases GPF was located closer to third molar. In seven cases, it was closer to second molar and in 12 cases, GPF was located at the junction of second and third molar. Posterior location of GPF, posterior to third molar is not noted. The utilization of multiple anatomical reference points, such as the incisive foramen, the intermaxillary suture, and the second and third molars simplifies identification of GPF.

The present study measured the position of the greater palatine foramen relative to adjacent anatomical landmarks in Brazilian skulls. The perpendicular distance of the greater palatine foramen to the midline maxillary suture in Brazilian skulls was about 14 mm and the distance of greater palatine foramen to the incisive foramen was approximately 36 mm. The distance of greater palatine foramen ...

OBJECTIVE In this study, we mapped the topography of the greater palatine foramen (GPF), within the South-Eastern European population, according to clinically identifiable anatomical landmarks. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used 100 dry adult human skulls, of which 75 were bilaterally dentate, whereas 25 were partially edentulous. RESULTS The shape of the GPF was oval in 84% of the cases. The fo...
متن کاملCBCT Evaluation of the Position of Palatal Neurovascular Bundle and the Greater Palatine Foramen in an Iranian Population
Background and Aim: Traumatization of the palatal neurovascular bundle (NVB) is a potential complication of soft tissue graft harvesting from the palate. Thus, it is imper-ative to have adequate knowledge about the position and path of the NVB. This study assessed the position of palatal NVB and the greater palatine foramen (GPF) in an Ira-nian population using cone-beam computed tomography (CB...

Purpose: Currently panoramic radiography is used for diagnostic dental, and bone lesions, but anatomical structures also can see, for example incisive canal. At present time incisive canal position is investigated in Iranian population. Materials and Methods: Panoramic radiographs were taken by Planmeca machine from 412 patients using standard exposure. The position of patient was in compliance...
